Fasting
|
Fasting
(eating less, for a religious motive, not just dieting) is a serious obligation for every christian and urged by Jesus in the Gospels.
Abstinence from meat on certain days is also part of the ancient tradition of the Church.
|
Fasting means eating only one full meal a day, with two smaller meals allowed which together should not equal the amount of food
consumed at the principal meal, and with no snacks in-between. Some, although this is not required, also give up certain foods as well as
alcoholic beverages on all the days of Lent.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday These days are days of fast and abstinence in the diocese. In addition, all Fridays of Lent
are days of abstinence from meat. All Catholics aged 14 and older are bound by the law of abstinence. Catholics aged 18 and over until the beginning
of their 60th year (their 59th birthday) are bound by the law of fast (Cannon 1252)
